I was on my way home from Uni the other day when a Radio One host was talking about the Danish phenomenon HYGGE. She had just been in Denmark where she had asked Danish people what it meant and the answers left her pretty confused.
One person had described it as:
Having a lovely cup of coffee
Having a beer with your friends while sitting in a train before going to a party
and a third Dane had said
It is sitting outside in the summer and enjoying the sunshine
Now this made me smile, those answers left the host even more confused than she was before asking but for me those statements showed it as clear as the sun.
Hygge might be ‘caused’ by different things for different people but the feeling is the same warm wholeness of simply just being.
Denmark keeps being awarded as the happiest country in the world and one theory for that is that Danes don’t want a lot. They don’t necessarily want to be rich or have an amazing career or the biggest house in the city.
It could be a coincidence that we have the word hygge or maybe not because hygge is all about the simple things and to live in the moment and feel good about yourself.
So in the Danish spirit; hygge could very well be riding a bike in beautiful weather wearing your favourite dress and your hair blowing in the wind with people you like spending time with.
Or it could be
Finishing a bike ride in the grey, cold weather and then come inside for a cup of tea and a piece of carrot cake in the De Koffie Pot by the Cathedral.
So all left to say is:
Hygge on and have a look at our Instagram account FietserLife to see what hygge also can look like.
